The top rated wet food for most puppies is Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe Puppy Chicken Dinner: it holds 4.6/5 from 5,200+ Amazon ratings, packs the most calories per ounce of the six cans below (496 kcal per 12.5 oz can), and its label covers puppies that will grow past 70 lb. If your puppy is a toy or small breed, the smaller Royal Canin and Hill’s portions make more sense, and we explain why below.
Star ratings alone don’t tell you much about puppy food, because almost every big-brand can sits between 4.5 and 4.7 stars. Two numbers on the label separate them much better: how many calories each ounce delivers, and whether the AAFCO statement includes or excludes large-breed puppies. This guide puts both side by side.
How we chose
We didn’t feed these to our own puppies. We started from wet puppy foods with at least 150 Amazon ratings and a puppy-specific formula (no adult foods marketed as “all life stages” toppers), then pulled the calorie content, guaranteed analysis and AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement for each one from the manufacturer’s page or a retailer copy of the label. Ratings and review counts come from the Amazon listings, checked October 27, 2026. We left prices out because they change weekly.
Then we did the one calculation most “best wet food” lists skip: calories per ounce. Wet puppy food is 76 to 82 percent water, so a low-calorie can means your puppy has to eat a lot more volume to get the same energy. For a small stomach, that matters.
The large-breed line on the label
Every complete puppy food sold in the US carries an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. Since AAFCO revised its nutrient profiles, a growth formula has to say either “including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult)” or “except for growth of large size dogs.” The difference is calcium. Foods that may be fed to large-breed puppies are capped at 1.8 percent calcium on a dry-matter basis, while other growth foods can go up to 2.5 percent, according to AAFCO’s published profiles and PetfoodIndustry’s summary of the revision.
So if you have a Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever or any mix expected to reach 70 lb or more, read that sentence before anything else on the can. Two of the six picks below exclude large-breed growth, and both are from Hill’s.
Comparison table
| Food | Can size | kcal per can | kcal per oz | Large-breed growth (70 lb+) | Amazon rating (Oct 2026) |

kcal per oz = manufacturer kcal per can divided by net can weight. Pedigree’s and Hill’s calorie figures differ between sources; we used the manufacturer’s own number and note the others in each section.
1. Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe Puppy Chicken Dinner: best overall
This pate has the highest calorie density in the group at 1,402 kcal/kg, or 496 kcal per 12.5 oz can, per Blue Buffalo’s product page. Its AAFCO statement covers growth including large dogs, so it works for a Chihuahua mix and a Great Dane puppy alike. The guaranteed analysis lists 9.0% crude protein and 6.0% crude fat minimum, with DHA added.
Who it’s for: owners who want one can that fits any breed size and who prefer a recipe without poultry by-product meals, corn, wheat or soy, which Blue Buffalo lists as excluded.
Who should skip it: owners of toy breeds who only use a spoonful as a topper, since an opened 12.5 oz can has to be refrigerated and used up within a few days.
- Highest kcal per ounce here, so less volume per meal
- Label includes large-breed growth
- Chicken is the first ingredient, with brown rice, barley and oatmeal as the grains
- 4.6/5 from 5,291 Amazon ratings (Oct 2026)
Cons:
- Big can only; no single-serve size in this recipe
- Dog Food Advisor lists “not budget friendly” as its main drawback for the Homestyle range
2. Purina Pro Plan Puppy Chicken & Rice Entree: best for larger breeds that mature slowly
Pro Plan’s puppy pate delivers 1,291 kcal/kg, or 477 kcal per 13 oz can, with 10.0% crude protein minimum, the highest protein guarantee in this group. Purina describes it as formulated for puppies up to 1 year old, or up to 2 years for larger breeds, which reflects how long big dogs keep growing.
One detail to check: the label copies we found (Chewy and two other retailers) read “formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth of puppies,” without the large-size wording. If your puppy will be over 70 lb as an adult, confirm the statement printed on your can or ask Purina before making it the only food.
Who it’s for: owners who want a vet-clinic brand with a high protein guarantee and a classic pate that mixes easily into kibble.
Who should skip it: anyone avoiding by-products, since “meat by-products” is the third ingredient, and anyone who wants a clear large-breed statement on the label copy.
- 10% crude protein minimum, 7% fat minimum
- Second-highest calorie density (36.7 kcal per oz)
- Contains DHA; Purina lists no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives in its feature list
- 4.6/5 from 5,513 Amazon ratings (Oct 2026)
Cons:
- The ingredient list includes “added color” even though the feature list says no artificial colors, so read both if that matters to you
- One top Amazon review reports dented cans in a case, which points to packing rather than the food
3. Pedigree Puppy Chopped Ground Dinner Chicken & Beef: best budget pick with the most reviews
With 8,064 ratings, this is the most-reviewed puppy can on the list, and Amazon showed 400+ bought in the past week when we checked. Pedigree lists 1,199 kcal/kg and 449 kcal per 13.2 oz can. PetSmart shows 416 kcal and another retailer 475 kcal for the same item, which usually means a recipe update; we used Pedigree’s number. The label covers growth, gestation and lactation including large size dogs.
Who it’s for: households feeding a litter, a big puppy, or more than one dog, where cost per can matters more than ingredient purity.
Who should skip it: owners who want named meats only. The ingredient list includes chicken by-products, meat by-products, added color and sodium nitrite for color retention.
- Large-breed growth included on the label
- 9% protein and 7% fat minimum, plus guaranteed calcium (0.40% min) and DHA (0.02% min)
- Pedigree’s feeding chart runs from under 5 lb up to 120 lb puppies
- 4.6/5 from 8,064 Amazon ratings (Oct 2026)
Cons:
- By-products, added color and sodium nitrite
- Calorie figures vary between retailer listings, so recheck portions against your can
4. Royal Canin Small Puppy Thin Slices in Gravy: best for small breeds
Royal Canin built this one for puppies from 2 to 10 months old with an expected adult weight of up to 22 lb. Each 5.1 oz can has 135 kcal (930 kcal/kg), and the thin slices in gravy are meant for baby teeth. The AAFCO statement technically includes large-size growth, but the chunk size and feeding chart are built around small dogs.
Who it’s for: owners of Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Cavaliers, Pomeranians and similar breeds, especially picky eaters. Amazon’s review summary says customers’ pets like it and singles out the gravy.
Who should skip it: owners of medium and large puppies. Royal Canin’s own chart has a 2-month-old puppy headed for 22 lb eating about 4 1/4 cans a day, so bigger dogs would go through cases fast.
- Single-meal can size, so less leftover food in the fridge
- Soft texture designed for very young puppies
- Prebiotics, DHA and vitamins E and C listed for digestion, brain and immune support
- 4.7/5 from 163 Amazon ratings, the highest score here (Oct 2026)
Cons:
- Smallest review pool on the list (163 ratings)
- Pork and chicken by-products are the first two ingredients after water
- Low crude protein guarantee (6.0% min) because of the 81.3% moisture
5. Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Small & Mini Chicken & Vegetables Stew: best single-serve trays
These 3.5 oz peel-top trays carry 90 kcal each (911 kcal/kg), according to Hill’s. On a dry-matter basis Hill’s lists 30.7% protein and 18.1% fat. Its AAFCO statement excludes growth of large size dogs, which fits the Small & Mini name.
Who it’s for: small-breed owners who use wet food as a topper or one meal a day and want no open cans in the fridge.
Who should skip it: anyone feeding wet food only to a puppy over about 10 lb. Hill’s chart has a 10 lb puppy under 4 months eating 7 1/4 trays a day.
- Portion-sized trays, nothing to store
- Stew texture, recommended by Hill’s for puppies up to 1 year and pregnant or nursing dogs
- DHA from fish oil and vitamins C and E listed
- 4.5/5 from 2,345 Amazon ratings (Oct 2026)
Cons:
- Not for puppies that will exceed 70 lb
- Lowest calories per tray, so many trays for a full wet diet
6. Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Savory Stew Chicken & Vegetables: best stew for small and medium puppies
The full-size Hill’s stew comes in 12.8 oz cans. The calorie figure published on Hill’s label copies is 309 kcal per can, while Chewy lists 323 kcal; either way, this is the least energy-dense food here at about 24 kcal per ounce. On a dry-matter basis it’s 30.3% protein, 18.9% fat and 1.83% calcium. That calcium figure sits just above AAFCO’s 1.8% cap for large-breed puppies, which is why the label says “except for growth of large size dogs (70 lbs. or more as an adult).”
Who it’s for: puppies expected to stay under 70 lb, whose owners want a stew texture from a brand Hill’s markets as the #1 veterinarian-recommended. One Amazon reviewer mentions their vet suggested it for a new puppy.
Who should skip it: large-breed owners, and owners of picky eaters. Several Amazon reviews describe puppies that refused it or wouldn’t finish it.
- Stew with chicken, pork liver, brown rice, carrots and peas in gravy
- Hill’s publishes a feeding chart by weight and age (under 4 months, 4 to 9, 10 to 12)
- DHA from fish oil listed for brain and eye development
- 4.6/5 from 3,241 Amazon ratings (Oct 2026)
Cons:
- Excludes large-breed growth
- Lowest calorie density, so more food volume per day
- Reviewers report some puppies reject the taste or texture, and one Chewy reviewer says visible vegetables disappeared from recent cans
How to pick the right wet food for your puppy
Start with your puppy’s expected adult weight, because it rules out foods faster than anything else.
- Adult weight 70 lb or more: only use a food whose label says “including growth of large size dogs.” From this list that means Blue Buffalo Homestyle or Pedigree Puppy Chopped Ground Dinner. Check the printed statement on Pro Plan before relying on it.
- Adult weight 22 lb or less: Royal Canin Small Puppy or the Hill’s Small & Mini trays. Smaller cans mean fresher food and less waste.
- Somewhere in between: any of the six works on the label. Choose by calorie density and budget.
Next, decide how you’ll use it. As a topper on kibble, calorie density matters less and a single-serve size matters more. As a full diet, the high-calorie cans (Blue Buffalo, Pro Plan, Pedigree) keep meal volume manageable. Hill’s 12.8 oz feeding chart, for example, has a 20 lb puppy under 4 months eating 3 1/2 cans a day.
Then switch slowly. Hill’s and Royal Canin both recommend a transition of at least 7 days, mixing more of the new food with less of the old each day. Royal Canin’s schedule is 25% new food on days 1 and 2, 50% on days 3 and 4, 75% on days 5 and 6, and 100% on day 7.
If you’re still setting up for a new puppy, our first-year puppy checklist covers food alongside vaccines and gear, and a stainless steel slow feeder bowl helps puppies that inhale wet food in seconds. Puppies also get into pantry food, so the kitchen section of our puppy-proofing guide is worth a look.
FAQ
Is wet food or dry food better for puppies?
Both can be complete. What matters is the AAFCO statement for growth. Wet food is mostly water (76 to 82 percent in this group), which adds moisture and appeals to picky eaters but costs more per calorie. Many owners mix the two, and several foods here are marketed as a topper or a complete meal.
Can a puppy eat only wet food?
Yes, if the label says it’s complete and balanced for growth. All six foods here carry a growth statement. Large-breed puppies need one that includes growth of large size dogs.
How long can an opened can of puppy food stay in the fridge?
Pedigree’s puppy pouch directions say to refrigerate after opening and use within 3 days, and to serve at room temperature. Royal Canin says to cover and refrigerate any unused portion. Check your can, since storage advice varies by brand.
When should I switch from puppy food to adult food?
Purina formulates Pro Plan Puppy for dogs up to 1 year, or up to 2 years for larger breeds. Royal Canin Small Puppy covers 2 to 10 months. Hill’s recommends its puppy foods for puppies up to 1 year. Your vet can confirm the timing for your dog’s breed.
What does “except for growth of large size dogs” mean?
The food may have more calcium than AAFCO allows for puppies expected to reach 70 lb or more as adults (over 1.8% on a dry-matter basis). It’s fine for smaller puppies and not suitable as the main food for large-breed puppies.
