A good crate should do three things well: fold flat for storage, hold up to a bored dog’s curiosity, and actually fit your dog with room to stand and turn around. We tested a handful of budget options against those criteria over several weeks with dogs of different sizes.
Wire crates remain the most versatile for the price — better airflow, easier to clean, and most fold down in seconds. Plastic travel crates win for car trips and air travel requirements. Soft-sided crates are the least durable option and best reserved for calm, already-crate-trained dogs rather than puppies who see mesh as a chew toy.
