Most traditional advice for stopping jumping — kneeing the dog, shouting “off,” turning away sharply — either doesn’t work or accidentally reinforces the behavior by giving the dog attention, which is usually what they wanted in the first place.
The more reliable approach is rewarding the behavior you actually want: four paws on the floor. Ask for a sit when your dog approaches, and only offer attention or greeting once they’re sitting. If jumping happens anyway, calmly step back and withhold attention until they settle, then reward the calm moment.
Consistency from guests is often the hardest part — a dog that never gets rewarded for jumping stops doing it far faster than one who succeeds even occasionally.
